Sporting Life 10K // My First EVER Run!

I ran my very first road race on Sunday with 27,000 others at the Sporting Life 10K, in support of Camp Oochigeas. Despite frigid conditions, it was a refreshing way to start my day!

My goal for this run was to come in under 1 hour and 15 minutes. I thought that was a realistic goal for a newbie runner.

The experience of running with thousands of others was extremely encouraging but also exhilarating. I enjoyed the route down Yonge St. and loved the occasional musical entertainment as everyone ran by.

Even though I tried to keep a pretty steady pace throughout, as soon as I saw that 9K route marker, I just booked it toward the finish line.

I ended up finishing the 10K in 1 hour, 5 minutes and 12 seconds! I kept a pace of 6:32/km (10:30/mi), ran the first half in 33:17 and the second half in 31:51.

For my next 10K, my goal will be to come in under one hour!

The 10K felt really good but I also think I could’ve gone further. These crazy thoughts could be the side effect of the runner’s high…

But I’ve already been eyeing a few longer distance runs in the city later this summer, like the Midsummer Night’s 15K in August or even the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Half-Marathon in October.

I think I’ll go for it because as the saying goes: “If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough”.

Got any Toronto road race recommendations for this newbie runner?
